Pretty

Scotland – land of low grey cloud, wet squish grass and muddy puddles.

Scotland’s beautiful when the sun shines but I have a strong appreciation for the dramatic look when it’s wet and cloudy.

Weekend in the Woods

This weekend we spent out in the fresh Scottish air, supervising a group doing a Duke of Edinburgh hike, a challenge I completed in high school. It was great to be out there, it reminded me Scotland is a wonderful place. It made me think, this is the life I want for my children, fresh air, green life, dirt, water.

This is a thought I often have these days as we think more about settling somewhere, it not just the two of us I consider any more.

I want to love my life surrounded by green and brown and black and grey.

Lunchtime Treat

Friday lunch time – things are changing, office moves, long term plans.

I hope taking time to enjoy sushi and a chat will remain in my schedule.

Thursday

The Flicker of the Campfire

Netherurd 2012

“The flicker of the campfire
The wind in the pines:
The stars in the heavens,
A moon that shines,
A place where people gather,
Make friends of all kinds,
A place where all men’s troubles
Are always left behind.
So give me the light of the campfire
warm and bright
And give me some friends to sing with
I’ll be here all night
Love is for those who find it
I’ve found mine right here,
Just you and me and the campfire
And songs we love to hear.”

{Sitting in the middle of nowhere South East Scotland, an old campfire song takes me back to my days in New Jersey as I stare into the flame – this flame will always mean more to me than an Olympic one!}

Life is Full

IMG_1398IMG_2467IMG_2728IMG_2795

Life these days is full; full of colour and light, full of laughter and a plea for help from a friend as a koala almost reveals more of me than expected.

It’s full of boat rides, sheltering from sea spray, of sunshine and holding hands.

It’s full of picnics and admiring the view.

It’s full of sunsets and sunrises, of endings and new beginnings.

What are you investing in?

Driving to work recently I was thinking about past places I’ve lived, how attached to property and places I become and how much of myself I gave to a certain place, a town, a community.

In particular I thought about my career and the positions I’ve had, I realised that I could tell how much I enjoyed and believed in my work by how much of myself I had invested in it. When I thought back to some of my favourite work I could still see a part of me there, so much invested and worked on that my influence is still there – procedures put in place, reports archived, experiences and memories shared.

2007 Camp America New Jersey 2004 - Working in Italy 2004 - Field Work East of Scotland2006 - London Underground 2007 Rock Drilling in Perth 2008 - Abseiling West of Scotland2008 - Flying at 80m over Ireland 2009 - Brownie Makes Her Promise 2011 - Another trip to Oz

How much time, energy and effort I passed into building the company; my work that will always be part of that company and a part of myself invested there that I can’t take back, that I don’t need to take back.

It made me more aware of what to invest in, to consider whether each job deserves the amount invested, to be sure to invest in the work that really matters to me.

What are you investing in today?

Spring in Scotland

Spring is my favourite season in Scotland, it’s almost as if we are surprised to get such beautiful days.

2012_04 Mull Calgary Bay 1

It reminds me that I really do live in a beautiful place, it reminds me of what the tourists come to see.

2012_04 Tobermory

It reminds me of new life, from baby highland coos, to the lambs bouncing around the hillside.

2012_04 Mull Baby Coo

Spring brings the arrival of puffins, their short chubby bodies, bright beaks and short wings.

2012_04 Staffa Puffin 2

Spring reminds you to pause for a moment and savour that warm sun and the beauty of everything around.

2012_04 Iona Beach 3

Spring brings clarity.
